EXCLUSIVE: Interview With Reason/Define - CelebMix

Reason/Define are a fast rising five/piece all female rock/post-hardcore band who recently shared their brand new single ‘Mirrors’. The emotional track has been lifted off their upcoming In Memory LP which is duo for release March 1st.

Here we chat exclusively to Reason/Define to discuss their new single and its music video:

What is the inspiration behind “Mirrors”?

This song is about that moment when all hope seems to be lost. It is for when you’ve hit rock bottom and you don’t have anywhere else to go. We want the people listening to our music to know that we’ve all been there. Every member of this band has been at their lowest point in life and didn’t know how to get up. This song is for anyone going through that right now, and is a reminder that you’re not alone. It is okay to have these feelings, but it is also important to know you can ask for help.

This has a more stripped back vibe than your other releases, was that a conscious decision?

It was definitely a conscious decision. We wanted to show a different side to Reason|Define. It also helps to drive home the concept behind our second album, ‘In Memory…’, that is about the 5 stages of grief. Mirrors is in the depression stage and having a stripped down piano ballad for that stage made a lot of sense to us.

What are you hoping fans will take from the track?

No matter how bad whatever situation you are going through gets, you can and will get out of it.

With the video what message are you hoping to convey through the visual?

Mirrors is a very stripped down song so we wanted a music video that could convey that stripped down nature. There are no flashy lights and crazy effects. It is a simple video that conveys a simple feeling: sadness.

What was the writing process like for this song?

Our drummer, Syd, was learning how to play piano and mentioned that she wanted to write a piano song for the new album. We wrote lyrics and Paolina and Syd sat down and figured out the melody and went from there. It was very different from our norm but we are really happy with how it came out.

How important do you feel music videos are to the success of a single these days?

Music videos have become one of the best ways to advertise a new single. People spend so much of their lives scrolling and searching for new media to consume. A good music video can pull people in with the visuals and keep them with the music.

What are you hoping to achieve with this release?

We didn’t write this song with a specific goal in mind. We write whatever we feel is going to make the song most accurately tell the story.
