The second half of Season 7 spends a lot of time leading up to their dramatic nuptials, and in one episode, fans even get to see Monica shop for a wedding dress — or did she shop for two dresses?
For the last 17 years, fans haven’t thought much about the episode, “The One with the Cheap Wedding Dress,” but now, some Friends viewers are questioning what looks to be a major mistake.
One eagle-eyed Reddit user noticed that the dress Monica buys in the discount store is entirely different from the one she tried on earlier, meaning that either Monica bought the wrong dress, or someone in the props department made an epic faux pas. It’s likely that we’ll never know what really went down, but hey, it sure is fun to speculate.
In “The One with the Cheap Wedding Dress,” Monica drags Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) and Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) to an expensive dress shop, where they meet a woman named Megan. Monica finds a dress she loves — a glittery number with a halter neckline — but she can’t afford it, so she tells everyone, Megan included, that she’s going to look for it at a Kleinman’s sale in Brooklyn.
Later, at the sale, Monica runs into Megan, who happens to be holding the same wedding dress that Monica wanted to buy. The two fight over it, and with the help of Rachel and Phoebe, Monica ends up winning.
But here’s the thing: the dress at Kleinman’s looks totally different from the one Monica originally tried on. As Reddit user DJreddit91 points out, “We see [Monica] searching and then exclaim to have found THE dress … but it’s an entirely different dress! It has capped sleeves and a different bodice, the original one being a halter neckline.”
Even if you don’t know jack s**t about dresses, it’s pretty clear that these two are not the same. Just look at them.
That’s not the end of the Friends dress saga, though. After winning the day at Kleinman’s, Monica learns that Megan has booked the Swing Kings, the band Chandler wanted to perform, for the same day as the wedding. Monica wants to make Chandler happy, so she decides to trade Megan the dress for the band — but first, she wants to try the dress on for her husband-to-be.
When Monica presents herself to Chandler, she’s back in the original dress, a moment that Redditors say has “driven [them] mad for years.” Can you really blame them?
