McLaughlin was born on 7 August 1999 in New Brunswick, New Jersey to Willie McLaughlin (father) who was a semi-finalist in the 400 m at the 1984 Trials, and her mother, Mary Neumeister, who was also a high school runner. Sydney completed Union Catholic Regional High School in 2017. She also graduated from the University of Kentucky. At an early age, Sydney was already running alongside her other siblings, Taylor and Morgan.
Sydney has since featured in several games. In 2014, she was part of the national junior-20 championships where she came second in the 400-meter hurdles. The following year in 2015, she took part in the national youth trials and she came second. The same year in the 2015 IAAF World Youth Championships in Colombia, she won gold. The next year in 2016, she won the 400-meter hurdles.
