Women's World Cup 2023: Brazil fire women's national team coach Pia Sundhage

A month after Brazil's women's national team were eliminated from the 2023 Women's World Cup in Australia, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has announced the dismissal of their coach, Pia Sundhage.

The Swede was under contract until August 2024 and was expected to be in charge of the national team at the Paris Olympics. Her entire coaching staff have also been sacked.

The intention of the body headed by Ednaldo Rodrigues is to prepare a reformulation of women's football in Brazil.

Pia Sundhage's stint with Brazil

Sundhage took over in August 2019. Since then, she had been in charge in 57 matches, recording 34 wins, 10 losses and 13 draws.

Her last game as Brazil coach was in Melbourne against Jamaica. The goalless draw resulted in the elimination of one of the theoretically strongest teams in terms of the individual talent.

Brazil exited the tournament with only four points, finishing third in Group F behind minnows Jamaica and behind France.

This failure came on top of the disappointment at the Olympic Games in 2021, when Brazil were eliminated in the quarter-finals.

The Swedish coach had previously won two Olympic titles with the United States, in Beijing (2008) and London (2012). With Sweden, she won silver at Rio (2016).

In her four years as Brazil coach, Sundhage only managed to win the Copa America, which was enough to qualify for the Paris Olympic Games.
